Greater Mt Isa Regional Research Project

The aim of this project is to define the Native Title Groups, or those Aboriginal peoples or groups having, claiming to have, or potentially having traditional connections, rights or interests in land within the Carpentaria Land Council’s representative body area. The research area is that of the Greater Mount Isa Region and that part of the Gulf Region of the CLC's representative body area that is covered by various native title determination applications. It stretches from Birdsville to Cloncurry and from Camooweal to Normanton.

Almost all of the research area is either covered by claimant applications or is the subject of assertions of native title rights and interests by Native Title Groups, therefore, the client requires expert anthropological opinion evidence that will be available for use in the litigation of the claimant applications, and any other relevant applications that a Native Title Group may wish to make in relation to land in the research area. Such evidence will enable the claimant applications to be better and more appropriately defined and will enable the CLC to effectively and appropriately provide assistance to the Native Title Groups in relation to the assertion of native title rights and interests in the research area.
