National Mentoring and Evaluation Scheme

The consulting arm of the AERC, was commissioned to undertake mentoring and evaluation services for the NIFVGP. This grants programme formed part of a federal government funding initiative called Partnerships Against Domestic Violence that was administered by the Commonwealth Office of the Status of Women. The service supplied by PMA to four rounds of grant recipients consisted of mentoring, or providing support and assistance to, a total of 74 Indigenous Project Teams situated in over 60 communities around Australia. The in-house PMA team worked in tandem with a number of consultant Mentors. Intense assistance was undertaken with a number of groups experiencing difficulty. A website was developed as a part of this project featuring numerous links to online resources related to Indigenous Family Violence. PMA also undertook an evaluation of the entire project, including the efforts of projects groups, the auspicing body and its own mentoring service.

In many cases mentoring proved to be of significant value to the NIFVGP and its participants. Independent support, advice and encouragement were provided to many ISPs while good practice examples were collected and performance problems documented. The mentors were also well positioned to carry out interventions in a number of poorly performing projects that required a sensitive approach to how they were reinvigorated and outcomes restored. The evaluation produced a number of significant recommendations that will positively influence the conduct of future grant programmes.
