Wellesley Islands Sea Claim

Between 1996-2000, Paul Memmott & Associates acted as the Anthropological Consultant on the Wellesley Islands Sea Claim for Andrew Chalk Solicitors on behalf of the Carpentaria Land Council. This project has drawn on Paul Memmott's 25 years of experience with the Lardil, Yangkaal and Kaiadilt peoples of the Wellesley Islands; time spent studying and recording their cultural and ethno-environmental knowledge.

    Aims: 
  • Extensive fieldwork and liaison with Traditional Owners
  • Documentation of rights and interests to be claimed and extent of sea claim
  • Compilation of report documents to be used in Federal Court - including geneaologies and 2 x Vols of Sites Recording Reports and an Expert Witness Report (also 2 x Vols),
  • Liaison with solicitors and client agencies
  • Extensive involvement with requirements of both native title and cultural heritage protection legislation
